Over the past week, 15 students at the University of Kentucky have come down with parotitis reported WKYT.
According to WKYT, parotitis occurs when the parotid glands inflame (located in front of both ears) and it could also be the sign of a bigger virus to come; most commonly mumps.
In an interview with Kentucky CBS affiliate WKYT, Director of Nursing at University of Kentucky Mindy Scott says that affected students are showing signs of fever, swelling, body aches, chills and even trouble eating. Despite all of this, the health center and classes are running on normal schedule while the cause is under investigation.
This report comes just as the norovirus recently plagued Urisnus College, a small college located in Pennsylvania, last week. 200 students reported abdominal pains, nausea and vomiting after eating at the campus dining hall.
